When workers win, the economy wins, by Lynn Forester de Rothschild, 06-02-2025

My piece in Harvard Business Review

Six years ago, I established the Council for Inclusive Capitalism as a non-partisan organization bringing together investors, CEOs and civic leaders to create a more inclusive, sustainable, dynamic and trusted economic system – a commitment which reaches beyond politics and partisanship.

As the new administration of President Trump takes charge in Washington, determined to implement his own policy agenda for change, I urge the President – and the business community – to remember the people who voted for him: lower-income communities across America.

That is why I wrote this op-ed in the Harvard Business Review, sharing my personal perspective on policies that could address the economic concerns of American workers who put faith in the Republican president, signaling a historic shift.

Why it matters: More than half of American workers without a college degree voted for Trump, giving him a mandate – and responsibility – to address income inequality and improve the working class in ways that benefit the whole economy.  Research shows that lower levels of inequality are correlated with higher overall economic growth, while companies that treat workers fairly  create sustained long-term value for their shareholders.

Pro-growth, pro-worker policies: Expanding employee ownership programs, raising the income threshold for federal taxes, and ensuring the minimum wage is a living wage will strengthen both workers’ security and the resilience of our broader economy.

Next steps: I believe business and policy leaders have a responsibility to help shape an economy that rewards work, strengthens businesses, and creates long-term prosperity. While these are my personal views, I hope they spark meaningful conversations among leaders about how we can build a more inclusive, sustainable, and dynamic economy.

How you can engageYour Voice Matters:

Across the world, voters have sent a clear message: they want change. In recent elections, incumbents have been voted out at historic rates as people demand economic systems that work for them—not just for a select few. Leaders must deliver to the people who put them in place.

Inclusive capitalism offers a path forward. By promoting policies that reward hard work, drive sustainable growth, and ensure shared prosperity, we can build economies that serve workers and businesses alike. But awareness and adoption of these ideas depend on collective action.
