Politics. Religion. Nabucco is Verdi’s retelling of the Old Testament story of King Nebuchadnezzar II’s religious conversion. On one side, the fiery Hebrew priest Zaccaria, battling to lead his people from oppression. On the other, Nabucco, the tyrannical Babylonian king and his adopted daughter Abigaille, who will stop at nothing to get her father’s throne and her sister’s lover. Will King Nabucco’s ambition rob him of his beloved daughter as well as his kingdom?

Nabucco was an instant success at its 1842 premiere, with the famous Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves (‘Va, pensiero’) taking on a political resonance that still echoes today. The twists and turns of this epic early opera by Giuseppe Verdi are often seen as a call to the national liberation struggle that would eventually lead to Italian unity. Exile and power, displaced populations and forced migrations are themes dear to Christiane Jatahy. The Brazilian director, filmmaker and author, who was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2022, gives new life to Verdi’s metaphor of the Bible by introducing the words of those who still stand up to tyrants and extremist ideologies today around the world. In this hall of mirrors, in which chorus and audience are reflected, maestro Antonino Fogliani leads the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande through Geneva’s new production of Verdi’s masterpiece along with a cast of excellent bel canto singers, including Riccardo Zanellato, Nicola Alaimo and Saioa Hernández. Here is a telling of epic history to help us reflect on our world today. Full performance streamed on Opera

Giselle – Diana Vishneva, Mathieu Ganio

For me here, she isn’t a ballerina playing the role of Giselle, she is Giselle!

Paweł Cisowski

What I really love about this performance is the fact Diana Vishneva is still looking so young, so good technically, but at the same time she brings to this role such kind of maturity incomparable to any other ballerinas… That’s why I am always so touched when we can admire ballerinas at her best as an artist, when you look at them and you don’t think about all difficult variations, attitudes, but you enjoy the real character.

For me here, she isn’t a ballerina playing the role of Giselle, she is Giselle! And I really love to see the growth of such a big talent she certainly has been since far 1994 year when performed and won Prix de Lausanne. I miss her so much in this role and I am more than conviced that even nowadays she could manage to perform it with same passion and technically so strong as we can see here.

Adam: Giselle (The Royal Ballet)

Giselle remains one of the most popular Romantic ballets of all time. The story brings together an engaging mix of human passions, supernatural forces, and the transcendent power of self-sacrificing love. The production by Sir Peter Wright catches the atmosphere of this great Romantic ballet, especially in the perfection of its White Act, with ghostly maidens drifting through the forest in spectacular patterns — one of the most famous of any scenes for the corps de ballet. Giselle dances with lightness and fragility, giving the impression of floating through the mist. This is one of The Royal Ballet’s most loved and admired productions, faithful to the spirit of the 1841 original yet always fresh at each revival.

This performance features former Bolshoi star and now Royal Ballet principal Natalia Osipova in a breath-taking interpretation of the title role.
