Behind the Image: David Hurn’s Beatlemania | in “Magnum”

David Hurn reveals the story and the process behind an iconic image of The Beatles’ Ringo Starr

In 1964 The Beatles starred in the feature film A Hard Day’s Night. Blurring the lines between the reality of their pop-star status and fiction, the film follows several days in the life of the group as they navigate television appearances and record label executives. Coming at the height of ‘Beatlemania’ the screaming fans depicted in the film were mirrored by the hoards of fanatic young girls that would await the band at all of their public appearances. David Hurn, following a tradition of Magnum photographers working on film sets, took this photograph of fans eyeing Ringo Starr on the moving train, where the film was primarily shot.

The Behind the Image series uncovers the untold stories that lie behind some of the most-well known images by Magnum photographers. Here, we speak to Magnum photographer and judge of the 2017 LensCulture and Magnum Photography Awards David Hurn to discuss the sequence of events that led to the surreal moment, and what might have happened had he not taken that shot.

What is happening in this photograph?
The photograph was shot in 1964 during the making of the film A Hard Days Night, a film staring The Beatles. Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey, MBE), is sitting in the carriage of an old-fashioned train. Fans have invaded the train and are looking through the outside window.

Des centaines de femmes kurdes ont pris les armes contre Daesh et il est triste d’apprendre la mort d’une de ces combattantes d’autant que cette photo de Viyan Qamishlo a déjà figuré sur ce mur lors d’un précédent post… mais voilà cette jeune fille est morte sous les balles des djihadistes de Daesh à Manbij. Elle avait 22 ans et sa beauté m’avait déjà frappé. Elle a été tuée lors d’une opération militaire contre Daesh, il y a quatre jours. Il y a quelques années, elle disait à un journaliste : “Moi, je m’appelle VIYAN, cinq lettres V-I-Y-A-N, qui m’émeuvent au moment où je les prononce. Maintenant, je suis une autre, je suis une résistante. Je laisse derrière moi la jeune villageoise que j’étais. Maintenant je suis Viyan. Je vais bientôt rejoindre la montagne, commencer mon entraînement, apprendre le métier des armes et devenir une guerrière.” Viyan n’était pas son vrai prénom. Elle l’avait choisi pour rendre hommage à une autre combattante morte. Les femmes dans l’histoire militaire ont souvent eu un rôle actif en tant que combattantes, qu’auxiliaires des forces armées ou ouvrières dans les usines d’armement et de matériel militaire, espionnes, agents de renseignements, résistantes ou combattantes dans des mouvements de guérilla. Viyan vient de rejoindre les étoiles et la sienne brillera jusqu’à la fin des temps.

Nastassja Kinski

Nastassja Kinski (1960)

The daughter of a maniac cinema legend, Klaus Kinski, the German actress obtained her début (non-speaking) role in Wim Wender’s film, The Wrong Move, in 1974 after the director’s wife had discovered the precocious beautiful 12 year old girl in a nightclub. She then appeared in a number of other films such as To the Devil, a Daughter, in 1976, in which she could be seen nude despite being a minor. It was Roman Polanski with his film Tess, in 1979 that turned the sensual ingénue into a recognised and admired star. She moved on to American films such as Francis Ford Coppola’s One from the Heart and the erotic horror cult film, Cat People, in 1982 – both films turned the actress into a strong object of desire along a popular Richard Avedon shoot for which she posed nude with a snake. In 1984, she reunited with Wim Wenders for one of art house cinema’s favourites, Paris, Texas, a film in which her beauty and subtle emotions were deeply emphasized. The actress soon returned to quite forgettable European films, mostly scrutinized for her relationship with legendary music producer, Quincy Jones. Fleeing the limelight to concentrate on her personal life, Nastassja Kinski then only appeared in supporting roles on television and a little number of films such as Father’s Day, in 1997. Is it because of her melancholic childhood facing a terrifying tyrannical father and a fragile hippie-like mother did the actress turn into a delicate and evanescent figure? With her mysterious and secret personality, Nastassja Kinski incarnates the image of an artist more than a film star. A poetic muse enliven by an iconic crimson red mohair sweater…

Telefonam-me e dizem-me: vem depressa, está um homem prestes a arder. Pedi calma, acabara de começar a escrita de um texto. Havia muito que a simpática inspiração não me visitava. Calma, por favor, não será fumo sem fogo? – ainda perguntei antes de terminar uma frase com a qual ia chegando a acordo. Que não, asseguravam-me num estado de agitação que por um triz não me passava para as palavras. Pensei então num homem a arder. E depois na rua onde esse homem se encontrava a arder. E depois no bairro onde esse homem se encontrava a arder. E depois na cidade onde esse homem se encontrava a arder. E depois pensei que daria uma bela fotografia. Olho a parede branca da minha sala e vejo o homem a arder. Levantei-me então, peguei na máquina fotográfica e fui a correr. Cheguei mesmo antes dos bombeiros. As chamas acariciavam o homem e ainda olharam para mim, vermelhas, rubras. Mal tive tempo para uma fotografia. Hoje, a fotografia do homem na parede da minha sala aquece-me no rigor do inverno. O homem, dizem que deu cinza. Mas se eu fechar os olhos, na parede de minha casa o homem também desaparece. Não há fogo sem fumo.

Por isso, precisamos da cedência de um espaço que não precisa de ser muito grande, com condições mínimas para que se possa fazer estes trabalhos, ou pro bono, o que seria ideal para não agravar as despesas, ou com uma renda nominal. De nossa parte, podíamos fazer pequenas obras de manutenção, garantir os gastos de electricidade e água e cuidar da segurança do espaço. Há por toda a cidade espaços vazios, lojas e pequenos apartamentos vagos, que podem servir para este objectivo,. A acessibilidade é também importante. O período da cedência seria de cerca de dois anos.
