Arquipélagos dos Açores e Madeira, Portugal

Have you ever wondered why Portugal has islands hundreds of kilometers away in the open ocean? The Azores and Madeira are natural “military and geopolitical bases” that made Portugal a maritime superpower in the past!

📍 The story begins from “nothingness.” Unlike most islands in the world, Madeira and the Azores were completely uninhabited when they were discovered. There were no wars or indigenous peoples; nature was pristine, waiting to be explored.

1️⃣ Madeira Islands (discovered in 1418)

– Discovery: Two Portuguese sailors, Juarco Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, lost their way in a storm and found themselves on an island they named Porto Santo. From there, they reached the larger island, which was covered in dense forests, and named it Madeira (meaning “wood” in Portuguese).

– Area: Approximately 801 km².  – Population: Estimated at approximately 250,000.

– Capital and main city: Funchal, the archipelago’s vibrant economic and tourist center.

– Importance: Madeira became a global agricultural laboratory, where sugar and grapes were cultivated, and a key supply station for ships bound for Africa.

2️⃣ The Azores (Discovered in 1427)

– Discovery: Discovered by the navigator Diogo de Silves. A geographical marvel, it lies almost halfway between Europe and North America.

– Area: Approximately 2,346 km² (distributed across 9 volcanic islands).

– Population: Estimated at approximately 240,000.

– Main cities: Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island, and the historic city of Angra do Hroysmo.  Strategic Importance: The Azores served as a refueling station for ships returning from India and the Americas. Without control of the islands, Portugal could not have maintained its vast maritime empire.

Did you know that the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t from Lisbon or Madrid, but rather from the Madeira Islands? He was born and raised in Funchal, and there’s even an airport and statues named after him there!

The highest mountain peak in all of Portugal isn’t in Lisbon or Porto, but rather Mount Pico in the Azores (2,351 meters).

The Azores are the only place in all of Europe with natural tea plantations, thanks to their unique climate in the middle of the ocean.

The Azores are ranked among the top 10 places in the world for whale and dolphin watching (more than 25 species live there).
